Black-margined Loosestrife Beetle (Neogalerucella calmariensis) (Linnaeus, 1767)

 

Synonyms: Galerucella calmariensis

 

 

Neogalerucella calmariensis a skeletonizing leaf beetle native to northern and central Eurasia (from the Iberian Peninsula to Japan). Introduced to northeastern North America in the early 1990s to combat the invasive Purple Loosestrife (Lythrum salicaria). A tiny (3-6 mm) light brown beetle, with a black triangle or a broad, dark stripe on the thorax. Adults overwinter and emerge in spring seeking out stands of L. salicaria. Both adults and the larvae feed on buds, leaves, and stem tissue of the host plant. A new generation emerges in July-August.
